Since I made exploring more of Kansas City one of my goals for this year, I’ve started to branch out and try some local restaurants in different neighborhoods around KC. Kansas City’s annual Restaurant Week happened in mid-January which allows you to try a 2 or 3 course meal at hundreds of restaurants around KC for a fixed price. I took advantage of the extensive Restaurant Week list and decided to check out some new spots starting with brunch at Michael Forbes Bar & Grille in Brookside.
Michael Forbes Bar & Grille is located right in the heart of Brookside surrounded by trendy boutiques and a mix of casual and upscale dining options. My friend and I arrived at Michael Forbes for Saturday brunch and were immediately sat at a comfy table. My first impression of the restaurant was that it had a very modern feel and was tastefully decorated with candles, flowers, and black and white artwork.
The menu for KC Restaurant Week offers a predetermined number of options for 2 or 3 course meals. I decided on queso dip for an appetizer which was blended with fresh spinach and tomato, served with thin corn tortilla chips. Our appetizers came out promptly and the queso dip was warm and tasty with very generous portions of queso dip and chips.
For my entree, I chose a chicken sandwich made with grilled Italian herbed chicken breast, Swiss cheese, bacon, arugula, and sweet tomato jam. Based on the suggestion from our server, I decided on seasoned shoestring fries for my side. The chicken sandwich was juicy, flavorful and topped with delicious crispy bacon. The sweet tomato jam was unusual as it’s nothing I’ve ever tasted before, but it was just the perfect amount of sweet to really compliment the juicy chicken sandwich. The tomato jam really set this sandwich apart from countless other chicken sandwiches I’ve had. It was unique and the generous portion of crispy, seasoned shoestring fries really went great alongside.
Overall, my meal was great and really flavorful with a unique twist on your typical American comfort food. The service was excellent and prompt, our server was extremely attentive and helpful while answering all of our questions about the menu. The atmosphere in the restaurant was relaxed and cozy, yet still modern. Michael Forbes Bar & Grille is the perfect spot for brunch with friends and family, a romantic date night or anything in between.
